UNION NOW? Note the question mark
was prepared in 1939/40 by the late Pastor A.B.Traina, Founder of Scripture Research Association, as a reply to traditional students of Biblical prophecy, who apparently were unaware that many of the prophecies concerning the future of the whole House of Israel are quite different from those concerning the House of Judah. Recognition of these differences in the light of history and ethnology is vital to comprehending the processes leading to the coming resynthesis of Israel and Judah on a higher level. This tract in the author's exact words, has been in circulation Since 1940 at a time when a second World War in less than 50 years was beginning in Europe. The United States was not yet openly at war, and much public concern was being reflected in the media about the possibility of preventing future World Wars by forming a federation of European democracies. Harper & Bro. had just published Clarence K. Streit's Union Now.

Statesmen are weighing the possibilities of "a United States of Europe." The radio repeats 'a United States of Europe." Newspapers reiterate "a United States of Europe." Authors and magazine writers who formulate the thoughts of the public all advocate "Union Now ."
Certain Bible students say: "Impossible, not in the plan. As iron does not mix with clay, neither will the German, Italian, English, Jewish, French, Spanish, and Greek peoples ever become a federation."
But what does the Bible itself say? It says that such a union WILL take place, and that subsequently the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of Yahweh and His anointed (Rev. 11:15). Furthermore in regard to the three great empires of history it says, "I will overturn, overturn, overturn it, and it shall be no more until He comes whose right it is, and I will give it (to) Him. (Ezekiel 21:27).

Union Versus Decentralization

In order to get true perspective of the present-day impulse toward union and to understand how and why union will once more be accomplished, it is necessary to look briefly into the record of early empires and to identify the peoples who formed them. Throughout the centuries, history has repeated itself in the two opposing movements of union and centralization for strength, on the one hand, and rebellion against, and eventual overthrow of, the resulting government with its attendant abuse of highly-centralized power.

The Medo-Persian Empire came into being by the union of the separate peoples who, as a minority, had been enslaved by Assyria. Having centralized control under Cyrus, these Medes and Persians assimilated territories previously held by Assyria and Babylonia. The Grecian Empire developed from union, under the Macedonian Alexander, of separate Greek city-states which had been continually attacking each other, or had been attacked by the Persians. Power having been centralized under Alexander, the Greek Empire assimilated territories previously held by the Medo Persian Empire then declining. Finally, the Roman Empire was formed by the expedient union of the "Italian" states together with an assimilation of the various parts of Alexander's empire. And in the later years of "Pax Romana", control was extended to much new territory by large scale wars of conquest. The Roman Empire, in turn, was broken and divided by successive waves of barbarian invaders, whose descendants today are the separate nations of Europe. These present-day descendants Of those Invaders are the basis of the current unrest in that unhappy continent. This much is accepted secular history. The Bible clearly prophesies that these warring peoples ---now far more numerous--- will again repeat history by gathering together and appointing themselves one head who will be "that man of Sin" the anti-Messiah.

The Prophecies Of Daniel

In the Book of Daniel we have at least three separate apocalyptical pictures giving the answer to this perplexing question of a European federation. One vision was given to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who was anxious about the future of the great empire he had built ( Daniel 2 :31-35 ) . The other two (Daniel 7:1-28; 8:1-27) were given to Daniel on different occasions. But in studying these three visions we find them to be three expressions of the same idea. "By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established" is written of Yahweh's method of confirming His Word to His servants.

In Nebuchadnezzar's dream of the colossal image, we find not a succession of Gentile (Japhetic) empires, but an end of those and the beginning of a new series of empires. These had within themselves the seed of deterioration. This seed was sin continuing in Yahweh's people, Israel. King Nebuchadnezzar went to sleep with an agitated mind, thinking about the future of his great empire. In answer to his troubled thoughts, Yahweh gave him a dream, as the result of which he awoke with a start. Sleep left him and fear took hold of him. Neither the dream nor any understanding of it remained with the king, but he was filled with apprehension. He called for help, summoning the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans and commanded them to recount his dream and the interpretation of it.

We all know what happened. They could do neither, since the dream was not for the benefit of the Gentile king nor his people, but for the two families which Yahweh had chosen (Jeremiah 33:24), Judah and Israel. This dream was to be the charter of Israel in their westward march of successive empires which are to end when Yahweh succeeds them with His empire, or world kingdom that shall have no end. No wonder then that the "Babylonian Brain Trust" could not solve King Nebuchadnezzar's problem. This made him so furious he would accept no alibis, though many were offered. He ordered mass execution of all the pretenders to occult wisdom and dunghill prophets." This order included even the wise-men-in-the-making; not only the faculty of the Babylonian institution of learning but also the student body in which were the four Hebrews, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

Daniel knew his Maker, Yahweh Elohim, and with his three countrymen held a prayer meeting, received a revelation, and followed it with a praise meeting. Daniel then asked to see the king, feeling confident that the revelation he had just received from Yahweh was true.

The king knew Daniel, and his hope revived when he saw the young Hebrew. He said, "Art thou able to make known unto me the dream I have seen and the interpretation thereof?" Daniel answered that the king's demands were beyond the accomplishment of man, "but," he added, ' there is an Elohim in heaven who revealeth secrets and will reveal to the king what shall befall in the LATTER DAYS, Here is the dream:

"Thou, O king, sawest, and behold, a great image. This great image whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee: and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part iron and part clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away that no place was found for them and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

"This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king: Thou, O king, art a King of kings for the Elohim of Heaven hath given thee an empire, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath He given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art his head of gold.

"And after thee shall arise another empire inferior to thee, and another third empire of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

"And the fourth empire shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes part of potter's clay, and part of iron, the empire shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the empire shall be partly strong, and partly brittle.

"And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

"And in the days of these kings shall the Elohim of heaven set up an empire which shall never be destroyed; and the empire shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and it shall stand for ever.

"Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the great Elohim hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter; and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure."—Dan. 2:36-48.

Here we have a clear-cut proposition. Either we must agree that Nebuchadnezzar did receive from Elohim the answer to his troubled questionings and accept the fact of Yahweh's revelation and of His program of predestined world affairs —especially where His chosen people are concerned— and we must also agree that this knowledge was obtained as a direct answer to a specific prayer of Daniel; or we must deny not only these, but also the well known facts of secular history accepted everywhere.

Babylonian Empire

Now let us analyze both the vision and the interpretation: First, we are told that the "HEAD OF GOLD" represents the Babylonian Empire. Founded by Nimrod (Gen. 10:8-11) and enlarged to include all of Assyria, Babylon then became a mere province in what we know as the Assyrian Empire. But after the death of Sennecherib, Assyria began to wane. When degeneration began, accompanied by wars without and insurrection within the Assyrian Empire, Babylon declared its secession from Assyria, and under Nebuchadnezzar II became the mightiest and richest empire of the East.

The Ten Tribes Enslaved—
The Jews Free

Nabopolassar, the father of Nebuchadnezzar II, had been the viceroy of Assyria in the province of Babylon and had entered into a secret alliance with enemies of the Assyrian Empire. Within this "fifth column" was a goodly portion of the ten tribes of Israel who had been shifted "en masse" from Samaria to Media (II Kings 17:6) and were smarting under the yoke of slavery. The viceroy caused the marriage of his son Nebuchadnezzar II to the daughter of the Median Cyaxeres. These "Medes" joined by other groups of enslaved Israelites in other portions of the empire were waiting an opportunity to strike for freedom. Historians have variously referred to these people as nomadic Shemites, Aryans, and Scythians, but apparently do not recognize them as Israelites, though all historians agree that the enslaved ten tribes were transplanted to and distributed throughout the same area in which they find these peoples. In other words, exactly where the "ten lost tribes" of Israel disappear, there the Medes, Shemites, Aryans, Persians and Scythians are found! This opportunity to strike for freedom came when Sennecherib invaded Judah and suffered a mortal blow at the hand of Yahweh Elohim, who sent a mighty pestilence, as recorded in II Kings 19 :35-36: "And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Yahweh went out and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in] the morning, behold they were all dead corpses. So Sennecharib, king of Assyria departed and went and returned and dwelt at Ninevah."

There, in the words of H. G. Wells' Outline of History, Sennacharib was "killed by his sons."

All this was the fulfillment of the word of Yahweh as spoken by Isaiah in 711 B.C., about ten years after the captivity of the ten tribes: "Yahweh of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot; then shall his yoke depart from off them and his burden depart from off their shoulders. This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all nations." Isaiah 14: 25, 26.

This disaster visited upon the Assyrians was a signal to the enslaved Israelites in Media and Persia to rise up against their captors in fulfillment of the word of Yahweh, spoken also by Isaiah:

"For Yahweh will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob. And the people shall take them and bring them to their place: the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of Yahweh for servants and handmaids and they shall take them captives whose captives they were: and they shall rule over their oppressors. And it shall come to pass that in the day that Yahweh shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou was made to serve, that thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon and say: "HOW HATH THE OPPRESSOR CEASED! THE GOLDEN CITY CEASED! YAHWEH HATH BROKEN THE STAFF OF THE WICKED AND THE SCEPTRE OF THE RULERS. HE WHO SMOTE THE PEOPLE IN WRATH WITH A CONTINUAL STROKE, HE THAT RULED THE NATIONS IN ANGER, IS PERSECUTED AND NONE HINDRETH."—Isaiah 14:1-6.

Notice that after the emancipated ten tribes of Israel have had rest from the hard labor imposed upon them by their Assyrian masters and from the hardships of the civil war by which they had gained their liberty, they were ready to deliver a taunting speech to the King of Babylon.

With Israel striking from inside the empire and Nebuchadnezzar striking from outside, the mighty Assyrian Empire fell. Babylon became an independent state, while the emancipated Israelites took over the rule of those countries where they had been slaves, thus "taking them captive whose captives they were," and founded the Kingdom of Media and Persia — the "BREAST AND ARMS OF SILVER."

Revolts culminating in 612 B. C. saw the end of the Assyrian empire. Under Nebuchadnezzar 11 a brief but brilliant renaissance developed in Babylon, but Babylon in turn succumbed to Cyrus, King of Persia, in 539 B.C. The Persians (became) a new element in Oriental history." (From 'A Guide to the Collections", World's Fair Edition 1939 published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Part I, p.23 ) . These "Medes and Persians" —the new element— combined forces, calling to the colors the other Israelitish captives, and made their final and successful attack on the capital, Ninevah, in 606 B. C.
